At 21, I signed on for a Beginners Program at the Brisbane YMCA under the instruction of Sensei Eddie Wrona who was at that time second in charge of the mighty Shukokai Association headed by legendary figure Sensei Lawrie Van DerKerk. At the completion of the program, the martial arts bug had really bitten and I found myself training up to 4 hours per day and at least four days each week. Travelling from Dojo to Dojo in and around Brisbane, I trained with some of the best instructors in the Shukokai organization of the day including Sensei Bruce Herd and Sensei Stan Prokuda. This was the heyday of martial arts in Australia, probably inspired by the recent release of Bruce Lee films and the Dojos were always filled to capacity with many strong young individuals keen to make their mark on the martial arts scene.I finally settled at the Indooroopilly Dojo run by Sensei Stan Prokuda and I also assisted Stan with teaching classes at his Jindalee Dojo.
I've competed at all levels of competition over the years and achieved high results in both the Kata and Kumite events. I've also travelled to Japan in 1999 and trained for the World Masters and competed in Sydney in 1998 at the Koshiki International where I earned first place in both the Kata and Kumite Divisions. I've also turned my hand to kick-boxing at various times and have experienced success in that arena as well. I recently received my Senior 2nd Dan Grading and I intend to pass on my skills and knowledge at my various Dojos.
Seeing children develop and achieve great things under my tutoring is maybe the top of the list. From a karate perspective, my best achievements in competition have been winning the Veteran’s Kata event at the 2003 Australian Koshiki Association’s National Titles in Sydney and the Open Kata event at the Bayside Titles in 2002. All my children are currently Black Belts in the Renbukan organisation (Daniel, Karl and Katherina)
This would be achieving my dream of going to Japan and training amongst several dojo's, achieving 1st Dan and being able to pass my skills onto younger generations through teaching.
